Generic ATA Setup
This guide works with most SIP-compatible ATAs including Cisco, Linksys, Polycom, and others. The exact menu names may differ, but the settings are similar across devices.
Your SIP Credentials
You'll need these details when configuring your ATA.
Step 1: Connect the Hardware
- Connect the ATA to your router using an ethernet cable (usually goes in the "WAN" or "Internet" port)
- Connect your fax machine to the ATA's phone port (usually labeled "Phone", "FXS", or "Line")
- Plug in the ATA's power adapter
- Wait for the device to fully boot (1-2 minutes)
Step 2: Access the Web Interface
Most ATAs have a web interface for configuration. You'll need to find the device's IP address.
Common methods to find the IP:
- Pick up the phone and dial *** or **** followed by a number (check your manual)
- Check your router's connected devices list
- Try common defaults:
192.168.1.1,192.168.0.1, or192.168.1.2
Once you have the IP, enter it in your web browser (e.g., http://192.168.1.105)
Step 3: Configure SIP Settings
Look for sections labeled "SIP", "VoIP", "Service Provider", or "Line 1". Enter these settings:
Step 4: Optimize for Fax
Fax machines are sensitive to audio quality. These settings help ensure reliable transmission. Look for these in "Audio", "Codec", or "Advanced" settings:
Not all ATAs have all these settings - just configure what's available.
Step 5: Save and Test
- Save/Apply your settings
- Reboot the ATA (usually in System or Maintenance menu)
- Wait for it to restart (1-2 minutes)
- Look for a "Registered" status or solid LED indicator
- Make sure your fax machine is on and set to auto-answer
Check Your Connection
Once configured, your ATA should register with our server and show as online on your dashboard.
Common Issues
- Not registering / No connection
-
- Double-check credentials - copy/paste to avoid typos
- Make sure "Registration" or "Enable" is turned on
- Check that port 5060 isn't blocked by your router/firewall
- Try rebooting both the ATA and your router
- Faxes fail or have poor quality
-
- Ensure G.711 codec is selected (not a compressed codec like G.729)
- Disable all "enhancement" features: silence suppression, echo cancellation, comfort noise
- If T.38 doesn't work, try G.711 passthrough mode instead
- Reduce fax machine speed to 9600 baud if possible
- One-way audio or no ring
-
- Check that your router isn't blocking SIP/RTP ports
- Enable "STUN" if your ATA supports it
- Some routers have "SIP ALG" - try disabling it
